Biography : Ki Hajar Dewantara
KI HAJAR DEWANTARA
The following figure is
known as a pioneer of education for indigenous peoples in Indonesia while still
in colonial Dutch colonialism. He is a prominent figure of Indonesian education
and also an Indonesian hero.
Ki Hajar Dewantara His
real name is Raden Mas Soewardi Soerjaningrat. He was born on May 2, 1889 in
Yogyakarta. His father was named Pangeran Soerjaningrat, from the Pakualam
Palace, Yogyakarta. As part of the aristocratic family, Soewardi was free to enjoy
his education. He studied at the Europeesche Lagere School (same level as
Elementary School), Kweekschool, and the Tot Opleidong Van Indische Artsen
School or STOVIA School. His recognition in the world of education was
extraordinary. Always thought that education is one of the most important
factors in the world of their suffering from colonialism. He changed his name
to Ki Hajar Dewantara. He did it because he wanted to get closer to people.
On July 13, 1913, when
he was 24, Ki Hajar was captured by the Dutch army because he made a
publication about his article Als Ik Eens Nederlander (if I was Dutch) in the
media 'De Express'. In this article, Ki Hajar Dewantara writes that if he were
a Dutchman, he would give his colony freedom. He must face the Dutch court. He
does that calmly and passionately. On July 3, 1922, Ki Hajar (as sparker of
ideas) and his friends at the Slli Kliwonan Association, founded Nationaal
Onderwijs Instituut Tamansiswa, or "Taman Siswa". The school is open
to Indonesians who want to learn. Ki Hajar Dewantara has three important
principles, when he operates his school, where there are 129 branches in
Indonesia. The principle is Ing Ngarso Sung Tulodo (in front of the example),
Ing Madyo Mangun Karso (in the middle of building spirit), and Tut Wuri
Handayani (from supervision). To this day, these wise principles are still a
guide and orientation in the Indonesian education world.
When Japan invaded
Indonesia, Ki Hajar Dewantara became a member of Center of People's Power
(PUTERA). PUTERA was built by Japan to monitor dangerous people for Japan. Ki
Hajar did it on purpose, so as not to be suspected and free to move. When
PUTERA broke up, Ki Hajar was selected as a member of Naimuhu Bunkyonkyoku
Sanyo. This is an educational organization created by Japan.
He received
appreciation as "Father of Education of Indonesia" because of his
idea in the world of education. His opinion is modern even though he lived in
colonial times (difficult times). He always thinks that everyone deserves an education.
He was also elected as Minister of Education under the government of President
Soekarno. Ki Hajar Dewantara is still trying to develop the education system in
Indonesia with its brilliant idea. When President Soeharto ordered, Ki Hajar
Dewantara was awarded as the "Mahaputera Star". He is also called as
the pioneer of Indonesian Press. Her birthday is celebrated as Education Day.
He died on April 26, 1959. His wife, Nyi Sutartinah, collected the items Ki
Hajar and her family had used. There are about 3000 items, then displayed at
the Museum Dewantara Kirti Griya, Yogyakarta.
